Originally founded in Turku in 1640 before being moved to Helsinki in 1829, The University of Helsinki was recently placed 107th worldwide in the 2020 QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings, regarded as a highly significant assessment globally. In addition, this is an improvement over its 110th position last year in 1000 of the about 4700 institutions in 82 locations they rate annually that make the actual list. Of the roughly 20,000 higher learning institutions worldwide, that would put Finland in the top 1%.

- Aalto University: 137th
- University of Turku: 287th
- University of Jyväskylä: 346th
- University of Oulu: 374th
- Tampere University: 395th
- Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT): 491st
- University of Eastern Finland: 498th
- Abo Akademi University: 541-550 band
To clarify, only the top 500 are given individual rankings, after which they are grouped into bands from 501-510 to 801-1000.

The QS World University Rankings use 6 indicators with variable weight for their evaluation, those are:
- Citations per faculty: 20%
- International students: 5%
- International faculty: 5%
- Faculty student: 20%
- Employer reputation: 10%
- Academic reputation: 40%
The University of Helsinki is still the 4th best institution in the Nordics, holding onto its position from last year and is ranked 36th overall in Europe. Also, it is certainly worth knowing that if you are studying in Finnish even higher education such as at university is free in Finland.
